Summary
This is a billet 6061 aluminum fuel tank sump with dual 3/4″ NPT ports. Total height of 1-1/4″ and dual o-ring seals. Installation requires a 2.5″ diameter hole (use a holesaw) in whatever tank you plan to install and a 4″ diameter flat area at minimum. No other modification or welding is required for installation. This is primarily intended as a feed and/or return for a fuel pump, however it can be used as a tank drain, vent (if installed on top), or anything else that requires access to the interior of the tank. Fittings are not included.
How is the AFP sump different from every other sump already out there?
My goal was to have the lowest profile and highest flowing sump available. Total height of the sump is only 1.25″Â with an overall diameter of 4.00″. My sump uses dual 3/4″ NPT ports allowing for much larger fittings than an ORB type fitting of the same size. NPT ports do require a sealant (typically tape or paste), but the advantage is a much larger selection of fittings and larger flow area vs overall area.
The Details
AN sizes are based on a nominal tube outer diameter of the equivalent size, so a -8an fitting means it is for a tube with a 8/16= 1/2″ OD. A -6an is for 6/16 = 3/8″ OD and so on. This is tube OD, not the internal flow area which is the important thing. If you want to match or exceed the area of a -16an inlet you need at least 380mm² of port area through the fittings. ORB ports require a much larger base diameter for the O-ring compared to a comparable NPT port. Saving space and making the sump low profile was the primary goal.
To be specific, the fuel pump I was considering uses a -16an inlet and I did not want to have any restrictions. A AN ORB sump of that size is at minimum 2″ tall and I did not want the sump to hang down that far. A -16an port has an area of 380mm², dual 3/4″ NPT ports using 3/4″ fittings have an area of 390mm². You could also upsize to 1″ fittings for the same internal path diameter as the port and have a flow area of 508mm² which is 30% more than a -16an fitting. My preference is for Beaded hose fittings so the hose can be removed if desired without damage, (Mcmaster part number 1745N19 for example).
Installation
You will need a 2.5″ diameter holesaw to make a hole in the tank for mounting. There is a register on the bottom sump that will fit inside the hole to make sure it is centered. You will install the stainless steel inner locking ring first inside the tank by using the slot to roll it inside. The halves are held together by a single 5/16″ bolt and the sump is sealed with dual orings. I recommend installing the fittings on the sump before installing the sump to ease installation. Some type of thread sealant must be used (tape or paste).
