This is a kit that includes the parts needed to replace the torsion bars with coilovers on (k1500) 88-98 trucks. This is the same kit that Dylan (Diggin_Z71) uses on his truck on his Youtube channel. This only works for 4wd/torsion bar trucks and is not applicable to C1500 or 2wd trucks of the same year. This only works if your truck looks like the picture above (control arms, frame mount, etc). DOES NOT FIT 2500 or 3500 series trucks. This kit is primarily intended for plus or minus 3″ from stock height. To go lower (4-6″ drop) you will need to combine the coilovers with a drop spindle. The kit will include the following:
- 2x Viking Double Coilover Shocks
- 2x Viking Coilover Springs (silver in color)
- Viking thrust washer and spanner wrench kit
You will use the menu above to select more specific options for the kit.
Fender Height Measurement:Â With the truck sitting on the ground measure from the center of the wheel/hub/axle straight up to the bottom of the fender lip. NOT from the ground. Stock height being 20″ as measured from the center of the wheel/hub straight up to the bottom of the fender. Measuring this way takes the tire height out of it and makes figuring out what you need much easier.
*Important Safety Note: It is highly recommended to reinforce or replace the upper shock mount on the frame. The best way would be to cut off the existing mount and weld on a flat steel plate tied into the frame with a new shock mount. The youngest of these trucks is nearly 25 years old, so fatigue and rust is inevitable. This should modification should not be attempted if the frame is already rusted or damaged. This kit will not turn your truck into a raptor or pre-runner, so please don’t try it. Absolutely no jumping. Mild offroad or trail riding is fine, but please have realistic expectations as this is mainly for street trucks. I take absolutely no responsibility for equipment failure or injury and equipment damaged in use will not be covered by any sort of warranty aside from manufacturing defects present at purchase.
Note 2:Â I strongly recommend a bumpstop be used to prevent the shock/spring from bottoming out hard and causing damage. Even a simple one like the Energy Suspension 9.9101G will go a long way to prevent damage. The stop should engage before the spring and shock are bottomed out and should be fitted beforehand and trimmed as needed to ensure this is the case.
Note 3: The shocks will mount with 1/2″ hardware. This is not included from Viking. I recommend using grade 8 and some form of locking nut. These should be readily available at any hardware store. You may need to drill out the factory mounts on the LCA and frame for 1/2″ as the stock hardware is just slightly smaller. You may also use spacers (not included) to keep the shock from moving around in the mount and to make sure there is clearance to the CV shaft and other front end parts. The shocks will likely need to be mounted with the knobs up (upside down) to clear, this is fine, the shocks can be mounted either way and function fine. Something like the ALL18572 should be very close.
Note 4: The UCA may need to be swapped passenger to driver side to clear the coil spring. The frame area may also need to be trimmed as needed (although shouldn’t need much). Aftermarket UCAs should work fine as long as they have the same or better clearance than stock.
